I like the current format for separating the posts. I recall when this appearance was put up for comments as a test forum. I thought it looked bland compared to the previous format. BUT I love the pleasant tones and appearance.
I see many different automotible forums with posting. This is the best one. IT does not have the huge color blasts and domination of advertisements overlaying certain posts. It does not have the advertisements that block viewing a post for a period of time like some other sites I see. When the advertisements block the content, I ignore them.
Here I actually look at the advertisements to see what they say or which model they show.
Keep the current appearance

Keep the current appearance
Yeah, it works. Simple and clean. I wouldn't mind the ability to change the background color, but it certainly isn't necessary.
A little time spent on "Vbulletin" based sites can make you appreciate the layout here. Implementing some of the features on those sites while maintaining the clean layout we have here would be awesome.

We use a faint gray line between posts... most other forums software draw visible black boxes around posts. Do you find our method cleaner/easier to view, or does that matter?
Doesn't really matter to me.
Would you consider changing to one of the commercial forum tools, like Vforum (???), which a lot of other sites use? Seems like I may be a minority here.

I agree with everything said (and in previous post, too). I also like the formatted width of the text area (even though I typically use wide-screen monitors at native resolution), as it is an easy reading width for the eyes; somewhat book-like. Forums that fill the full width just seem more tedious to read, for some reason.
I also like the mellow tones and post separation. I think that, right now, the thing I would like most is a "like" option, so as to indicate agreement without necessarily needing to chime in with a separate post.

Honestly, I don't use them very often! Usually only when I'm trying to locate an old post that I either wrote or read more than a few days prior. In those cases, I can usually remember the poster and a reasonable amount of content, so I don't think I tax the search engine very much.
#26 of 84 Search this discussion
Feb 27, 2013 (11:17 am)
The search within discussion is nice and versatile. I've used it to search back through for key words that I recalled from a post. It has nice search parameters that come up after the initial search and results are shown.
My only note about the search was long ago it used to be possible to search for a particular word or user name, such as my own, and it would give out all the posts ever done. Somewhere in the past years, it seemed to develop a limit as to how many pages total it would regurgitate or a limit on how far back it went. Seeing the first few words of each post with names and beginning would help find something from the past.
I'd like to see that reinstated, but it's low on the priority list of things because I'm mostly happy with the current calm appearance and operation of the forum.
Things to add:
#1 A list of new topics added, e.g., the 5 most recent new discussions.
#2 A random list of topics, e.g., 5 random topics currently existent.
These would be in the right hand pane on pages where the bottom of the pane is empty just like "Most Popular in Forums" and "Edmunds Answers" are today.
Each of these would allow users to see topics they may otherwise not know existed.

The grey line that divides posts is fine. Keeps the appearance clean.
#28 of 84 Screen Width / Photo Posting
Feb 27, 2013 (12:22 pm)
I enjoy the forums I follow, but the wide grey bands down the sides are a waste of half the screen - and we could easily post much bigger pictures if you widened it out - I know you aim to make money from the ads, but most of each side is just grey.
I always seem to have trouble posting pictures - partly my fault as I use a Mac and Safari as my main browser rather than IE or Firefox, and I'm fairly computer illiterate but also because the site is a bit clunky with some photo stuff...
Don't like the idea of big black boxes around posts though = that just sounds like clutter for clutter's sake.

For a while, the misspelled words would show up in red within the text on the spell checker. That was a great help in doing corrections. I would like to see that again. Thanks for all that the hosts do.

I forgot all about that, it would be nice to have back!
