Wish you had issued that challenge a couple of weeks ago when I had a brand new computer sitting here while setting it up for my mother-in-law. Drivers could be an issue, but I bet I could get XP running on it. Maybe even Windows 98, which is 15 years old.
XP is still supported by MSFT through April of next year. It was first released in Oct. '01.
My Mac friend has an older MacBook Pro (~1996) and he thinks that Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is the last one that will still work on his computer. He's sticking with 10.5 though because some programs he uses won't work without upgrading them (to the tune of $3,000).
He's not seeing big spikes here with FF but he's not looking at car videos either.
Oh, and you can try a lower video quality setting and see if that helps when you look at the car videos. Left click to that setting or Control key > video. May have to set it to Low every time though.

Re watching car videos, I guess somehow I didn't make it clear enough in the beginning. I am not willfully watching car vids. I'm talking about the ones up at the top on the right side of page when it first loads here on Edmunds. They just load and run away with usage while all I am trying to do is read a forum page. You guys weren't doing that 12 days or so ago. It is something quite new and sure isn't any improvement by any stretch of the imagination...or at least not for members. I am shocked that no one else has complained? I can't be the only one that sees these huge video files and from nothing more than a small 2.5" x 2.5" screen up in the corner. And every page starts a new video all over again. Altho I think amid was explaining a setting that might address that. I haven't experimented as I simply don't have usage to spare. I'm way in the red already and have 2 weeks to go still
I guess that there are only two scenarios. Either the majority of users here have a current ad blocker browser, and/or they simply have tons of gig usage to spare every month. I do know that the US doesn't pay anywhere near as much as we do tho for usage. They really bend us over here
Anyone else here paying over 70 bucks a month for only 3 gig?

Guess what confused me is that when I browse Edmunds in Chrome with no blocking or IE with lots of ad blocking, I don't see the video ads, just some animated gif stuff now and then (Toyota Final Days ad, NV cargo van ad, etc.). I do see those autoload vids on other sites all the time and yeah, they bug me. Especially when they have sound. I'm assuming you're seeing car ad vids.
We pay $30 for 2GM when we travel so we can use the iPad as a wifi hotspot so I can do real work on my laptop. That's through Verizon and you pay by the month, no contract, and it lasts a month or until you use it up (or renew it). AT&T still makes you sign up for a contract last we looked.
No limits at on my home DSL through my local phone company.

I did not realize you were using Apple OS. But I did look at my Mozilla/FireFox setup with the adblockers and in the tools menu there's an adblock plus item and and in that there's an options item which says show tab on Flash and Java. I had noticed on sites that there were little tabs on some of the movies when I rolled my cursor onto them. The tab says "Block." So at least I can stop them if they get through the Adblock/AdblockPlus.
In Internet Explorer, under the advance menu in tools|internet options|advanced there were a choice to "Play animations in websites." I had tried turning that off and restarting and don't recall if it helped or not. I also removed and disabled Java.

The slowness / "freeze" issues you are experiencing are not due to your browser's version. I tend to use Firefox as well (25.0), and whether I use it or Chrome, the load times are horrendously slow. I've become way behind on many conversations I track simply because I'm not willing to wait for the pages to load. So, when the site is working tolerably (I wouldn't call even "tolerable" anywhere near how fast I expect it should load), I then end up just marking as read rather than reading because there are too many posts to read them all.
Pretty frustrating. I'm thinking about pulling the plug on Edmunds.

that outages like the one that we all experienced over the past day (more-or-less) will be eliminated when the rumoured platform change/improvement takes place.
I find it interesting that the Cadillac ATS board gets one post a month, whether it needs it or not, while the Lincoln LS board back in 2000 got 30-40 a day. Both represent new (at the time) cars that are/were exciting to car guys.
I hate to see the Edmunds forums crater, but many of them have. Hopefully whatever's in the works will address both the mechanics of making the boards work reliably, as well as inviting more people to participate in the conversations.

On the new platform there is a rating function for comments. If possible now, I would be giving this a standing ovation.

Hate to say it but the colors and graphics are really boring here...a real yawn fest. There's got to be a way to liven this site up with different fonts, colors whatever...with all the smart tech people y'all employ, someone must know how to liven things up. I love this website and am here and let's just say...a lot! Best site on the web as far as I am concerned!!!

I lilke the pleasant tones that the Edmunds site uses. I visit many other sites, and the stronger colors and especailly the "cute" schemes sometimes used are tiring.
The Edmunds site's tones distinguish different parts of the page without yelling. This appearance emphasizes the content rather than the site designer's choice of colors and schemes.
Nothing is worse than having a site that uses a dark color in a field and the text disappears into that field because of the wrong colors chosen.
I'm hoping they'll keep it similar in the future.

"I lilke the pleasant tones that the Edmunds site uses."
I agree 100% with that statement and the rest of your post.
