#1 of 2 Ticking Sound on Engine Startup by texpete

Every once in a while I hear a short ticking sound when starting up the engine. It happens maybe once every day or two. I can't get the noise to repeat itself if I restart the engine numerous times in a row. It only seems to happen after it has been sitting for a while and not every time. My power train warranty is about to expire so would like to know if this could be anything to do with the power train. Frustrating when you can't get the problem to repeat itself so the dealer knows what to look for when bringing into the shop.

Have you had the check engine, VSC, or Trac Off lights come on? If so, have the diagnostic code read ASAP. Our 2010 Sienna has been displaying the same behavior and last weekend all three lights came on. There is a technical service bulletin for this behavior, T-SB-0094-09. The service manager at our local dealer said if you hear what sounds like a bunch of rocks in a tin can for 3-4 seconds on a cold start it could be this issue. I would have your dealer take a look at it before your powertrain warranty expires.
