2002 C230 problem with bucking/hesitating

Have never had a serious problem with this car - 125,000 mile - but in the last week or so, has been bucking when driving. To me, it feels like the gas is not getting to the engine. It recovers after a few seconds but is kind of scary to be on the road at 60 mph. The Mercedes shop is checking out but have not yet found the problem. There were a lot of trouble codes because I hadn't had checked for a while. They cleared the codes and took for a long ride to replicate the problem. They did experience the same thing I did but apparently the trouble codes weren't adequate to identify the problem (I think check engine light did come back on) and so they need to do different tests. Any hints as to what this could be - getting worried about a huge bill for this. Thanks.
