Thank you for the question. I should have put this in the OP. Yes, the radiator cap, actually the overflow tank pressure cap, was off and set aside during the entire operation.

a lot of your coolant will remain in the engine block and it's not unusual to have 1-2 gallons in the engine block to get it all out you have to get your cooling system flushed
