My 1998 Venture with 163K miles is leaking coolant from the water pump onto the belt, causing it to squeal. The shop said it also has a small leak in the lower intake, and that replacing just the pump might blow a gasket. I'd like to do just the pump first, but is that a bad idea?

I don't see the connection myself, but the LIM gasket is a problem that can cause coolant to leak onto your cam shaft causing it to seize. I'd get that job done without delay if the shop is certain its leaking.
