#1 of 1 Buying used: What year model to avoid known transmission problems?

Hi all;
I am soon to be in the market for a used minivan. My last 2 vans were Toyota Previas. I had my heart set on an Odyssey until I started reading about all the known transmission problems.
My budget is tight, around $4000, so I am going to end up with something considerably older. My question is, is there a "safe" period for the Odyssey before the transmission problems became widespread? Because, in my price range, I am finding Odysseys between 1995 and 1999. I am not sure but it SEEMS like the reported problems started with the 1999 model? Yes? no?
I am a full time student and mom of three on a limited income. I can't afford a gamble but if I can get an older, well cared for Odyssey and not have to worry as much about this problem I'd like to go that route. I will be buying cash from a private individual.
If not I will keep looking for something, maybe an older Sienna. I have always driven Toyotas and Hondas almost exclusively because I know that I am not likely to end up stranded and I can usually get close to 300,000 miles out of them with minimal headache but the transmission problems are a big concern for me when considering my next purchase. Once I spend that $4000, I have very limited resources for dealing with anything beyond regular maintenance or lower-dollar repairs.
