Assuming the following on an early XK8...
Updated steel timing chain tensioners and new chain
Good engine compression
No nasties on the carfax or previous paintwork
Nice interior
etc...
A Sapphire Blue one with 37k that LOOKS and DRIVES like a 37k mile car...
$8k wholesale easily, up to $12k retail, perhaps more to the right buyer.
Been dealing w/ Jaguars for 14+ years.

I appreciate your post. This particular Jag is a one owner being marketed by a Portland, OR used car merchant specializing in old luxury vehicles. The asking price is $14,995 so I've been trying to justify his figures. Thank you again.

Spend more, buy newer.
00+, ideally 02+.
97-99s have Nikasil engine blocks which can fail.
97-02 AJ-V8s have timing chain and tensioner issues, very reliable assuming they are caught in time but to update them is $1200+

Happy to help!
Unless one of these has been upgraded to steel timing chain tensioners and a new timing chain assume that it needs to be done ASAP.
Period.
Otherwise these are great cars, don't overpay for a baby mile car, a higher mile one that's been well maintained can be a great car to own.
#164 of 180 Dealers Response to TMV

I got the below message from a dealer. Basically he said the TMV is bunk and way of and to not trust Edmunds. I'll change the name slightly to protect the guilty, but based on the tone I will be taking my business elsewhere - if you want to figure out the offender, it we easy enough to do. Hopefully this will help others stay away. When I find a good deal, I'll post it to the forums and maybe it will help the next car hunter.

Hello robteaboy,
My name is Joe D and I am the Internet Manager for Joe C Ford in Carol Stream Illinois. Thanks for your interest in the new Ford Focus and Joe C Ford as your next new car dealer . The 2012 Focus Titanium with a Price of $22,489 is a non- existent vehicle that Edmonds as they have always been in the past a great source of mis-information. That potential Focus is a base Titanium with a Manual Transmission [NOTE - on the ford website, I can only build a Focus Titanium with an Auto tranmission.] and no dealer would stock that limited supply type of vehicle on their lot .We all have limited allocation and try and stock what we can sell immediately so as to free up more inventory for our future sales.. This type of Focus would have to be a factory ordered and delivered as soon as it came in .. Ford offers no Rebates or Special Finance Rates on the 2012 Focus at this time. Where you are getting a $500 Rebate and 3.9 Financing is again , mis-information [NOTE Source, Ford.com]. There had been earlier in the year prior to the vehicle introduction to the public , a $500 Incentive called a Technology Rebate . Where you had to order a new 2012 Focus over last summer with the Technology Package and before October 30 th 2010 to qualify. When your new 2012 Focus arrived this Technology Rebate of $500 was applied to your factory order , and that ended back in January 2011.. I also took the time and did a search of Dealers Inventory of an Eight Surrounding State area and found three cars all at $24,950 plus, plus , plus. You will have to consider ordering a vehicle , because that's the only way you will get you Titanium Focus with Winter Package and Manual Transmission . Hope this answers most of your questions and if there if anything we can do for you in the future . We are always available at www.joec_____ford.com
Sincerely ,
Joe D

Geesh, I don't think I could let such an email slide. I mean, simply the fact that he says it is a nonexistant vehicle but then proceeds to tell you that you can order one would drive me up a wall and I would just have to point out his obvious contradiction.
#166 of 180 Considering the present equities crash

How can dealers expect us to pay their pre crash prices? I would maybe offer 75% of asking price for any vehicle, new or used. If my portfolio suffers, why should they not suffer accordingly?

The dealers certainly didn't choose your portfolio for you.

Dealers don't control what they pay for new cars. The manufacturer does. Offering 75% would probably be politely declined. Along with the broom.
