#149 of 180 TMV Pricing between model releases by mbgcan

Are TMV prices for used cars updated monthly as we move from one model year to the next or are they static until the new models are released

Hi mbgcan,

Thank you for contacting Edmunds through our forums.

Generally, both our new and used TMV® figures are updated on a monthly basis, and do not include tax, title, license or registration fees. However, please be aware that, due to current market conditions, we review our TMV pricing for all vehicles on a regular basis and make adjustments if necessary.

Please let me know if I may be of any further assistance.

Kind regards,

#151 of 180 Are TMV values realistic? by jagojago12

I've seen tons of people balking at the TMV price and saying they can get that money through a trade-in. I have yet to try offering the TMV price to a dealer but from what I've seen from the private party sale, I'm having my doubts they'd accept it. I've been called names, straight up denied to being implied I was trying to cheat people by trying to use TMV. What's up?

a vehicle can't be valued three different ways with three different prices. A vehicle, like real estate or stock is worth just so much whether it's being sold by a private party, dealer, or linked as a "Certified" purchase which is laughable.

IMO the car's cost is the same in all scenarios. What you're paying for is the gamble that the selling party is reputable. In essence you're getting:

Private party price: The car.
Dealer used: The car + the dealer's reputation.
CPO: The car + the manufacturer's reputation.

If it's a true CPO car, you are also getting an extended warranty...

Hi jagojago12,

Thank you for contacting Edmunds through our forums.

As mentioned previously in this forum, generally, our used TMV® figures are updated on a monthly basis. However, please be aware that, due to current market conditions, we review our TMV pricing for all vehicles on a regular basis and make adjustments if necessary.

Please note that the Edmunds.com TMV price is an average of cars selling in the market therefore some buyers will buy below TMV and some will buy above TMV.

Regarding your private party sale, if your vehicle is a newer vehicle with unusually high mileage, it can sometimes command a lower price over an average example of the same model. While our Used Car Appraiser adjusts a vehicle's TMV® pricing estimate according to its specific mileage, color and condition, the estimate it produces may not reflect real world prices for these rare examples.

Regarding your question about offering the TMV price to a dealer, we recommend that a few alternatives can be: get other quotes for the vehicle you are interested in from many different dealerships or you can try negotiating with the dealerships regarding the value of the vehicle.

Please let me know if I may be of any further assistance.

Kind regards,

What's important to remember is that any guide is just that, a guide.

Used cars are influenced by so many factors that it's impossible for any online guide, especially one that's updated monthly, to be completely accurate.

Regional differences can vary wildly, color can cause substantial swings in value, so can equipment. Also, the market is a bit nutty lately, even the so called accurate guides that us dealers use to conduct business with are often inaccurate. Right now certain cars are bringing substantially more than Galves (probably the most accurate guide out there for trade-in values), while others barely bring "book".

Galves doesn't show the value difference between a Green GS350 AWD without Nav and a Pearl White with Black interior one with Navi, it might show $1,000 but reality can be as much as a $3,000 swing on those two cars. It also doesn't show what a, say, low mileage Pearl White cadillac with a moonroof will do at Manheim when running in, say, Hollenshead's lane at the anniversary sale. (If anyone subscribes to Galves they'll get this).

TMV may show a $1,000 swing in a FWD vs AWD RAV4, but they might not show that the FWD RAV4 is saleproof in, say, Massachusetts and that an AWD won't bring a premium over a FWD in Miami or that a Pearl White Avalon will bring a grand over any other color wholesale or that a Brown car is saleproof or that if you were foolish enough to buy a Mercedes in NY without heated seats or a CTS without a moonroof, etc...

etc...

Hi euphonium,

Thank you for contacting Edmunds through our forums.

Please note that the Edmunds.com TMV price is an average of cars selling in the market therefore some buyers will buy below TMV and some will buy above TMV.

However, regarding your TMV appraisal, if you have an older vehicle that is in pristine condition and with unusually low mileage, it can sometimes command a large premium over an average example of the same model. While our Used Car Appraiser adjusts a vehicle's TMV® pricing estimate according to its specific mileage, color, and condition, the estimate it produces may not reflect real world prices for these rare examples.

For help pricing such vehicles or other antique, classic, or specialty models, we suggest consulting one of the variety of publications dedicated to them, such as "Sports Car Market" or "Hemmings Motor News," which you can find at most local bookstores and newsstands.

As mentioned previously in this forum, generally, our used TMV® figures are updated on a monthly basis. However, please be aware that, due to current market conditions, we review our TMV pricing for all vehicles on a regular basis and make adjustments if necessary.

I hope you have a wonderful 4th of July holiday weekend and please let me know if I may be of any further assistance.

Best regards,
