The engine light is on at all times. It only goes away when reset by computer only to return after 40-50 miles later. What could be?

#4 of 4 Intermittent Firing Problem
by beemerjoy

My 2001 Miata occasionally will start up and run on three cylinders - more often in warmer weather and more frequently when re-starting after the car sat for an hour or so. This usually lasts for anywhere from 1/2 to 5 miles, then all cylinders will kick in and it runs fine. Except it burns out the cat converter when it does this.
Mechanics have only found the "intermittent firing problem" code when they hook up the analyzer, but no solution has been found. Compression is fairly even on all 4 cylinders. Anything from an ignition coil problem, to air flow sensor to a faulty injector has been suggested.
Anyone have experience with this or ideas on how to analyze further?
