93 Eurovan won't start after driving a distance

After driving my Eurovan for a while it will not start again seemingly until it's cooled down. What I noticed is that when I go to start it after stopping is that the indicator arrow on the dash go down to "D" for drive instead of staying in park. After waiting a while it starts in "P" for park. Why the heck is it doing this!?!?!
