HI.. My car was ovearheating and to bring gauge down must ride with the heat on. I brought to mechanic and he said the computer told him it was the head gasket. He opened the engine and had the head gasket tested and it was fine but replaced all the gaskets and bolts. While engine open put in new timing belt, water pump and thermostat. The mechanic drove several miles that morning said good to go.The A/C was running very cold.. Drove a few miles now mid day overheats!! It seems
can only drive at night for it run cool.. Please help.. I live in NC and been very hot in temp so cant drive in 98 degrees with the heat on! What else could this be.. thank you in advance!r

It could be the thermostat is malfunctioning. That happened last week with my wife's Forester.

A similar problem with the thermostat affected my 93 Miata a while ago, too. But he did mention it's new?

It would be a little foolish not to put a new thermostat in there since he already had it cracked open. I would first check to make sure the fluid is circulating properly and "burp" the coolant system. If it still doesn't work, there's still an issue with either the gaskets or the water pump.
