Loud Whirring/Whining at Start Up

Just after starting our 02 Chev Venture Minivan, V-6, there is a loud whirring or whining sound coming from the engine compartment It goes away within just a few seconds or so, and only occasionally happens while driving, and seems to stop when you take your foot off of the gas pedal. It seems to be intermittent, not always happening. The sound is NOT belt-like, squealing, but more of an electronic whirring, similar to the sound made by the wiper washer pump... and, when it fades, it reminds me of a siren wale as it tapers off. No idiot lights and check engine has NOT come on. I'm lost. We just bought the van from a used car dealer who offered us a 30 day warranty, but we live in the woods of upstate NY and his shop is over 100 miles away... and we cannot arrange for him to pick up. So, we are stuck for now. Any ideas?
