What is the Terrain?
Competition in the compact SUV segment is fierce, and each manufacturer has to make a strong impression to stand out. A fuel-efficient motor, comfortable ride and up-to-date infotainment are all requisites, with extra points awarded for powerful engines and high-quality interior materials. Unfortunately, the GMC Terrain doesn't really offer any of these. Aside from its standout styling, there's no reason why you should consider the Terrain over its less expensive corporate sibling, the Chevrolet Equinox, or better yet, almost any one of the other vehicles in the class.
There's a glimmer of hope on the horizon for GMC fans, however. The Terrain is expected to receive a full redesign in the not-too-distant future, with the third-generation model believed to debut for the 2024 or 2025 model year. Camouflaged Equinoxes have been seen testing on public roads, and given that the two models share a common platform, a new Terrain is sure to follow as well.
We recommend bypassing the current Terrain entirely — instead, wait for news about the upcoming redesign or consider a top-rated alternative like the Mazda CX-50 or Honda CR-V.
