what is the right way to clean the motor hot or cold high pressure or hose 02 caravan 3.3 68.000

I had a salty old mechanic/mentor show me a very dirty engine back in the mid 1970s and then he asked me, "Son, see all that crap on that motor?"
 
"Yup."
 
"What would you do with it?"
 
"Why I'd scrape as much of the crud off it as I could and give it a good steam-cleaning" I proudly responded.
 
"Son, you gots lots to learn," he chided, "there ain't nuthin' wrong with that motor; it starts great, runs smooth and strong, and gets pretty dern good mileage."
 
"Yeah, so?" I said a bit defensively.
 
"So, it it ain't broke, don't eff with it."
