a year after bought 2004 MDX, 2 inch line appeared on LCD display in center. Over the course of a few months, the line became a black dot size of quarter in center of display (to right of mileage display. Don't have navigation system.

LCD displays are susceptible to physical damage which can damage the actual display or electrical connections to it. Though it's not supposed to happen with modern displays, they can also be damaged by excessive heat.

Depending on which system you have, you may be able to simply replace the display. I found a video that shows you how to do it for a stereo system: http://carsoundsystem.org/replace-lcd-on-a-pioneer-deh-p3800mp-car-stereo-facepl- ate/

I don't have hands-on experience with this so perhaps others can give you pointers if you need them. Anyone?
