My 5-speed 02 Legacy Wagon is increasing in RPMs when trying to rapidly accelerate with no apparent acceleration or power gain. The RPMs increase then back off and then it seems to accelerate. If it was an automatic transmission I would say the transmission was slipping. I am perplexed. Has anyone else ever had this problem. Thanks.

Sounds like the clutch slipping. How many miles on it?
