I guess I'm in sticker shock..... quote from one Subaru dealer for the 60k maintainence running almost $1k. Another quoted $649. What has your experience been???

My guess is they are doing lots of extraneous stuff there that isn't in the owner's manual. If you want to cut the costs down you can ask them for a list of what is actually performed for that service, then put it side by side with your owner's manual and see how many services are "extra".
My experience is that if you use the dealer, the book usually only calls for the next service down - ie what they do for their 15K service is all you need every 30K, and what they do for their 30K is all you need every 60K (and you don't EVER need their 60K).
The only exception to that is the timing belt service, which is at 105K if memory serves.
If a smaller package service won't suffice, go to an indy shop and ask them just to perform the services listed in the book, which will be a lot less than $649 (this strategy usually doesn't work well at the dealer, as the ala carte items often add up to more than the package service with their labor rates).

Agree with the post above, i.e. they're doing more than necessary.
Still, dealer near me is close to $600 for the 30k service and around $700 for the 60k.
So the $649 actually doesn't sound too bad.
Here's a tip - get a Chase Subaru credit card, earn 3% back up to $500 per year in Subaru Bucks, and use that to pay for service. I have $500 accumulated already, so our next big service will be free.
