Hi, I'm interested in getting a scan tool for my 1996 Grand Caravan SE. I heard ODB II began in the middle of 1996. So I'm not sure if the ODB II supports my van or should I get an earlier version.
Appreciate if someone can suggest how I can determine if ODB II will work with my van or not.
Looking also for a low end one. Brand recommendation would also be appreciated.
Thanks.

I have an early"> 97 GC and yours should be the same. It is both, meaning you turn the key on three times within 10 seconds and the check engine light will flash the codes. There will be a pause between the numbers, and the codes are 2 digits. I find it easier to count the flashes until it hits a pause, then just write the numbers and group them into pairs at the end. Code 55 means the diagnostic has finished. It will repeat all the the codes 3 times. The meaning of the codes can be found on line.
There is no need to buy a code reader if you don't really need it. Harbor Freight has the cheapest ones I have found, if you really want to go that route. Autozone Auto Parts stores will put their scanner on it for free and give you the codes it read. After all, they want to sell you the parts to repair your car.
You can clear the codes by disconnecting the battery ground cable for a few minutes.
