as there doesn't appear to be a thread for the new up coming redesigned model, I thought its time to start one.
It was already announced in the Geneva Auto Show and then introduced to the New York Auto Show at the beginning of April.
It should be in North American showrooms this fall.

Here's the Inside Line blurb about it:
2011 Kia Sportage: 2010 New York Auto Show
Revised cabin and new sheet metal. And only a 4 cylinder initially available until the turbo arrives. Wonder what the crowd reaction to a 4 cylinder is going to be?

Shouldn't be a problem if they check the specs. The '10 version with the 2.7 V6 produces 173 hp, the 2.0L I4 produces 140 hp. Curb weight 3230 - 3527 lbs.
The '11 2.4L base I4 will produce 176 hp and the 2.0L I4 turbo estimated at 274 hp. Haven't seen the specs of the weight on this new version, but I would imagine that it won't be more than the current version.
I have the 2.4L in my '08 Rondo and it has lots of power and its not as high a hp as the new version will be producing. Besides competitive vehicles like the CR-V have never had a six and they certainly sell lots of units. I think this version will do much better than the current one in this segment of the market.

I am very impressed by the exterior shots of the 2011 Kia Sportage, IMHO the exterior is much better looking than the new Hyundai Tucson. I think the 2.4L engine should be more than sufficient for a vehicle of this size and weight.
I keep reading conflicting information in the early reviews about when the Sportage will be available in the US market. Some say mid-summer 2010, others say the fall of 2010. Anybody have any firm information about this?
Do we know where the new Kia Sportage will be built, will it also be built in Georgia alongside the new Kia Sorento or will it be built in Korea?

Yeah, but how many will check the specs? Turbos still have a bit of a reputation, undeserved or not, in the US. The typical buyer would probably prefer a small V6 over a 4 or a turbo - 4.

I haven't read any firm confirmation from KIA, but my local dealer here in Canada is expecting it in August.
The Sportage is currently built in South Korea and Slavakia - North America getting the production from Korea. I know from production figures that the the Sportage line in Korea is currently being changed as they only built 43 units in March, 1,245 for February and 7,761 in January (these are all units for export).
Again nothing firm from KIA as to what is the next vehicle that will be built in Georgia, but have read possible the Santa Fe (but that is currently being built in Alabama) also speculation is could be the new Optima or Forte, but we should be getting something firm shortly.

I follow what you are saying, but people are going to have to get out of this mentallity of thinking that a V6 is more powerful than a four.
The Sportage's direct competition like the Tucson, CR-V, Rogue, Tiquan (it only offers a turbo) do not have V6's. If they feel they need it they can move up to a Sorento.
You are now finding that vehicles in the past that didn't even offer a 4 cylinder are now making it standard. How many vehicles have V8's these days, that used to be standard on the vast majority of vehicles at one time.

Thanks for the update. I guess August would qualify as late summer/early fall. There is actually some advantage for me that they come from Korea as the vehicles come off the boat here in the Pacific Northwest. Though KIA prices seem to be higher here than in other parts of the US.
From what I see on Youtube, it looks like the new Sportage is already on sale in Korea as the "Sportage R". The instrument panel looks a little bit different than the north American version.
I had also been reading that Hyundai was going to shift SUV production from Alabama to the KIA plant in West Point, GA. It looks the KIA/Hyundai folks are on fire right now, with the Sorento selling well and getting lots of positive reviews for the Optima, Sportage, etc.

Further update on the arrival of the new Sportage. I was at my Canadian dealer today getting a normal service done on my Rondo and talked to the Sales Manager and he informed me that he has been notified that he should be getting the new 2011 Sportage sometime in June. He was surprised and hopes they are right as he has quite a few on order for stock and customer looking forward to seeing it when it arrives.

I am so excited to see that you got some news from your dealer. As soon as I found out about the new Sportage (April 1), I went to my local dealer (Plaza KIA Thornhill) and asked about it. One sales guy said next year, but the other said some time this year. He was supposed to email me when more news is received.
Do you mind telling me which dealer you are referring to? I am really looking forward to getting the 2.0T version. However, I wonder if it will have 274hp just like the Optima and Sonata?
