I've had a '94 DC and now a 2007 DGC, and have never had a broken window like you've described. Only time I've had a broken window glass been from rocks/stones - either deliberately thrown or tossed up from the road.

Despite what the police said, I would go with the BB/rock theory. Just because they didn't find one doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I was riding today in a 2002 Town & Country on a rough city street doing 25-30 mph when the backlight exploded. I was with the owner trying to determine a noise in the drivetrain when this happened. The lift gate must shake excessively and allow the edge of glass to make contact with the bodyside, wow. Now the van is at the glass shop, so the drivetrain noise must wait.

Today 3/2/10 aroud 9:00am after pumping gas as I left my rear window exploded I took it to the dealership and they said they never seen any thing like it before. Mine is a 2007 Town and Country to and it was around 27 degrees also. I also had about the same size hole in my window and the rest shattered I was woundering if your hole in the window was near the wiper ?

My hole was on the left (drivers side) just above center. My glass guy said he never heard of this problem either. He measured the the door to make sure it was correctly fitted. He also checked for vibration - and found nothing.

I put in a safety incident report with the NHTSA. I don't know if it will do any good but you can never tell. Really sorry you had the same expensive problem - Good Luck!

Rear passenger door window exploded sitting at a stop light. It was replaced under comprehensive coverage at no charge.

Google it and you will find that it happens to all makes and models.

My rear window in my 2007 Town and Country van just exploded this morning. I was on an interstate driving 55 mph on a smooth road surface. The outside temperature was around 54 degrees. I heard a loud popping noise and looked in my rear view mirror to see the entire back window like a spider-web. There was a larger crack, almost a long narrow hole on the driver side to the left center portion from the windshield wiper. Once I was able to stop and take pictures it was almost like it was related to excessive pressure. All four corners and sections missing.

My 2007 Chrysler T&C (54,000 miles on it) rear window exploded this morning as I entered the driver side door and closed it. Car parked on street. Temps in mid 50's. No evidence of vandalism in or around car. All four corners were broken out and big elongated hole in center (horizontally). Rest was all crazed and continued to fall out as I drove to have window replaced. Guys at business that replaced it said they had one explode like that while it was in their garage after having just replaced the windsheild. Sounds like metal stress somehow except that there was no real fluctuation of temperatures yesterday, last night or this morning.

2006 Grand Caravan rear window exploded. Freezing temperatures over night. Car was parked in my driveway under a temporary garage shelter. Pieces of glass were on the driveway and the shattered glass fell into the back of the van. Glass was broken at the corners and seemed to emanate from the windshield wiper base. No BB or ball bearing or stone found. Wondering if this is a stress failure and not vandalism? Wondering what the frequency of occurrence is? Car went through the car wash the previous day when temperatures were hovering just above zero.

Might want to look at the NHTSA government site, see how many cases they have on file for exploding windows.

I have a 2007 Grand Caravan, so am familiar with the rear wiper mounting. The mount is a little soft, so I'm sure there's a rubber mounting grommet that the wiper assembly mounts to that's supposed to provide some compliance. Maybe you got some water in there during the car wash that then froze???

My 2007 Chrysler T&C rear window exploded this morning, in my driveway. Temps were in the 50's. The police department said it wasn't vandalism, and the glass repair shop said the glass was faulty. All four corners were broken, and a long hole in the center. The same as you have reported. I am extremely upset. I reported the issue to Chrysler.
