I have a 2008 toyota sienna with 26000 miles. It started smoking, brought it to the dealership, $1200 later they told me it had oil sludge and I needed a new motor. would not cover under warrany with out 5 oil receipts. I change all my cars oil myself. don't know what to do.

Tough to believe your story !! 26 k miles--sludge?? And you change your own oil.. Are you sure you also did not have sudden acceleration???

Do you have receipts for the oil filters and oil you purchased?
 
I change my own oil, but I have both of those. I buy oil by the case (usually from WalMart or Costco), and oil filter I've been buying on-line because they're fairly pricey in stores.
 
I also keep those little stickers that you put on the windshield, you can find those in auto part supply stores. I have a folder and all that stuff goes in there, to document the service.
 
Time to hunt around and find those receipts. Good luck.
 
PS The 1MZ engines were sludge-prone, but the 3MZ and 2GR (the two latest generations of the Sienna V6) have not been.

I used 5-30W Quaker State but was told mobile syn. was the best

I have this same problem. My car has 36k miles on it. Bought it used certified through Sunnyvale Toyota. Got engine light came on recently, they said that they found oil sludge. First oil change was done by my husband, then we brought it to Jiffy Lube - they said they would not honor the oil changed done by my husband unless we have a receipt. Called Toyota to get a case# going, because they said that if it breaks down again it would not be covered under warranty but will be charged on my own expense. I have extended warranty on the vehicle which is now deemed useless. This is my first Toyota and I am very disappointed with this.

My toyota sienna "stalled" and I took it to mastercare auto - i knew i needed brakes on the rear but wasn't sure about the stalling - they said i needed a new oil gasket /strainer ($353 P & L) - I thought the problem might be related to the oil sludge issue and took it to my dealer. The same dealer did an oil change for me awhile ago (my husband has been doing them every 5K miles with mobil 1) and said i had sludge so they kept the car for two days, cleaning out the engine i guess. They now have no record of this work - and told me i need a new engine $3800 to $6800 depending on the mileage and choice of rebuilt, etc. I know I can't go back to toyota since my vehicle is 10 years old but is there any chance the mastercare guy was right, and i could replace the oil pan gasket / strainer and my van would safely run for a little longer? thanks

Just information, but my 1mz 2001 has 135k on it, no sludge, oil stays clear between changes, doesn't use any, gets changed every 3k with filter.
The secret to success with any Toyota is to use full synthetic oil, my choice is Mobil I, and to change it every 3k miles. It has worked so far with me, and my Sienna goes like a scalded cat and you can't hear it run inside the car.
 
If you're going to spend the price of a Sienna, mine was $25k back in '01, it makes sense to buy the best oil to keep it alive. Going cheap on maintenance has a very poor payoff.

I would get another opinion--while your vintage of Toyota is sludge-prone, changing the oil every 5k with Mobil I should prevent it. I think you were given the old 'here comes a woman, let's sell her some expensive work" routine. Have Hubby take it to a AAA top shop near you, for example. It's a terrible practice, the scamming of female customers, but it's been going on for a very long time, unfortunately.
If you find out it isn't sludge, contact the better business bureau about the Toyota dealer you dealt with that had no record of working on your car. That's garbage.

thank you for the replies - my husband was with me when we took it to toyota - when he drove it home, it makes a terrible knocking noise - he says it is because the oil isn't getting to the pistons. we have a mechanic friend who is going to take a look but i am pretty sure the sludge has destroyed the engine - we have been doing the mobil 1 oil changes every 5K so I am not sure why this happened to my engine - is it worth it to replace it (we have been looking for a new engine online, and the mechanic can get one direct from his source as well) but with a 10 year old car should I put the money in? (can't afford new right now - had hoped this would last to 200K miles -I have always had great luck with toyotas until this one) - just had new brakes and everything else runs great. thanks
