Salt Lake City, Utah..First drive of 2010 Audi S4 6 speed manual. As an Audi owner (2005 Allroad 2.7T 6 speed manual) I was very excited to drive the all new S4. A few years back I drove and almost purchased a 2007 S4 Avant Manual. The V8 felt so powerful and sounded great driving around town. I really enjoyed the driving experience and feel of the car.

The new S4 seems like a great car in so many ways. But once you get inside you realize it's not the same. There are way to many buttons and knobs. The remote key push button start is a gimmick. I know Americans want their cars to be giant drive-able cup holders, ipod jacks, have fake F1 paddle shifters and work like their lap tops. That's fine for 95% of the cars. But this is supposed to be a "drivers" car and inside it just has too much going on. On the plus side the seats are very nice, and the front seat leg room is better than the old S4.

The driving experience was bland...Yes the track numbers are good. I know the double clutch auto is fast at changing gears. But I drive in the mountains and around a town not at a track. A "drivers" car needs to "feel right." It's not about numbers it's about the sound, feel, and smile you have when you dive. The new 3.0 supercharged engine is lacking the feel and sound of the old V8. I know the tuning companies will have an easier time and get it cranking out over 400hp for less than a grand. Which is one positive for a forced induction system.

Over all I'm sad to say I'll be sticking with my Allroad and maybe getting it tuned soon. As for my goal of buying a S4. I think would rather have a nice used S4 V8 for $30K or a RS4 for $40K. Better than spending a lot more for something that feels weak and wishing it had more.

Come on Audi you can do so much better!
