Remember a few years ago when we were trying to figure out the crossover? We just couldn't get the idea of a sort-of car on a car chassis but tall almost like an SUV. Now crossovers are everywhere, and their sales appeal has saved not a few car companies.

I had an opportunity to look at and sit in one at my local dealer's lot. It was dark, and the back of the lot wasn't lit well, so it was hard to get a good look. First impression inside was just okay...I sought this out to check out room. I'll go back when they have the official prices and one that can be driven. I was able to find a decent seating position, but would prefer to buy it without the mandatory sunroof. The car has more room than my M35x, but just barely. The website indicates a bit over 41", but again, false advertising...you can't buy it in that configuration in the USA! They are only offering it in the USA with the sunroof. The rear seats have a distinct hole carved out for headroom for the rear passengers (only the outside two) that would not be required if the thing didn't have the sunroof. I didn't sit in the back, so can't say how good or bad it was...it did look roomy, though. I'll reserve judgement on the styling until when I can see it in the daylight.

The international website shows three engines for the rest of the world at intro: the 8, a gas 6, and the 3-liter turbo diesel. The diesel is spec'ed from the factory at 6.9 seconds to 100km/hr and 36+ mpg overall on the European cycle. Sounds like the x-drive options may not show up until late next year as 2011 models. Too bad, that will hurt the sales in the snowy areas.

Available only with run-flat tires. It has a non-standard alternator (has a clutch and doesn't run except when braking or decelerating normally), and as a result, needs a special battery it is unlikely you'll be able to buy anywhere else. The innovations should make a nice vehicle.
