Easier said than done. The local Mazda dealer does not have any Speed3s in stock. It's not really a gas vs. diesel thing. I don't care what kind of fuel powers the engine. I've never driven a diesel before though, and without the diesel engine the Jetta strikes me as very ordinary. I'm just looking for some input. Besides the lease is not for a couple of months and I'm not ready to go to the dealer yet. I hate those places and will only go when necessary.

You are really just going to have to drive them both. I have a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3, but I'd be driving a GTI today if the Louisville VW dealers weren't so miserably incompetent(in both sales and service).
Me, I'd take a long hard look at the GTD:

Ironically, I too have been deciding between the two. I've test driven the 2.5 Mazda 3 (168 HP) 2010 manual hatchback and it was a lot of fun to drive. I'm looking forward to trying out the Mazdaspeed 3 when they come to our area in the next ten days or so. I've tried the VW Jetta 09, the GLI 09 and the TDI 10. The GLI was a joy to ride. The TDI was very different and in-fact I had difficulty with the clutch on the diesel engine. I want to go back and try the automatic TDI. At this point, I'm leaning toward the Mazda 3 (speed vs 2.5L). The dash and amenities were much nicer with the Mazda, not to mention the comfort of the seats. Surprisingly, there was more back seat room in the 2010 Mazda 3 than in the VW. I was dissapointed with many of the materials of the VW Jetta body, especially for the money. However, that GLI was a whole lot of fun to drive. I look forward to comparing it to the Mazda 3speed.

I also tried the standard Camry and Altima. The Camry had a great drive and sound system, but I felt like I was driving a tin can. The Altima had me feeling like I was floating all over the road.

I'm interested in other's opinions of these cars...

Thanks for the information. It's funny, I too was disappointed with the materials used in the Jetta. I hear so much about how great VW's quality is, but I didn't see anything special.

My Miata has been problem fee so far, so I know I'd feel confident that the 3 would hold up well. Although the paint seems really thin and there is an incredibly annoying rattle coming from the stereo.

If they put the GLI suspension in the GTI it would be awesome. Also can VW offer some more colors for that car? Everything is shades of gray, and I'd like the option of cloth seats as well.

wow are you serious?

one of the reasons i abstained from buying an 09 regular 3 was because the interior quality was only like a half step up from my fit. (which is nice for the price but still a subcompact.)

the jettas interior, especially in 2010 is the best in class. and its well documented as such. if you cant tell (or wont tell the difference) than maybe the appeal to a modern vw makes it simply not the car for you. i'm not saying the mazda is not nice, but its simply not as nice as the jetta, especially on higher end models. granted i dont expect it to be either, given the fact that the VW in general is a sort of near premium brand.

the gli and gti do basically have the same suspension.

and cloth is standard on the jetta, though higher/specialty trims either have unique fabric or leatherette.

Sorry, my mistake. What I meant to say was "If they GTI suspension in the TDI sportwagen it would be awesome".

Cloth is only standard on the base model Jetta, and it's a nice cloth. The TDI forces Leatherette on you.

yes and its a shame too.

i took my wifes beetle for routine maintenance the other day and the '10's are out, and their interior now looks very reminiscent of the new golf that has yet to come out. (sportwagens now have the new golf front end as well. it looks great.)

there should be plenty of quality aftermarket pieces for the tdi wagon that you could get, and i'm pretty sure that VW offers at least some lowering springs.

the gti's suspension is pretty nice though, and it would be nice to have it.

interestingly enough, according to vw's press materials, the GOLF tdi will be available with optional sport seats and sport suspension in both 2 and 4 door guise. i know it does not have as much space...but maybe its worthy of your consideration?

Thanks for the information. I do like the new front end on the sportwagen. However, at this point, I've decided to hold onto the TSX for a little while since it's paid for.

i dont blame you sir, the tsx is a fantastic car! i still love the styling of it, especially compared to the current gen. (though the current gen is not bad by any means.)
