#1 of 3 Auto-dimming Mirror Leak Question by jpod2

Aug 27, 2009 (7:13 am)

I had my 01 Forrester in for service yesterday. When I picked it up, the upper left corner of the rear view mirror appeared clear as if fluid was missing. There was no obvious sign of a leak. The service manager said this is a common problem. Is it truly common for the auto-dimming mirrors to suddenly fail on their own or is it more likely due to some mishandling?

Thanks in advance for your assistance?

They do fail, only occasionally, but we've seen a couple of those fail with members here.

Not common compared to wheel bearings, for instance, but not unheard of.

The entire top 1/4" to 3/8" is clear on my '03 Outback; it's been that way for several years. My Mom's '02 Outback is fine though.

I think I'll skip the option on my next car.
