#1 of 5 2002 Venture WB AWD: ABS Light and AWD Disable
Aug 18, 2009 (7:04 am)
Took my vehicle in for rear breaks at Monroe Muffler. They told me that the rear coil (?) was bad and in pieces. Guess they had to take the whole rear end off to fix. Couple days later, the ABS light comes on and the AWD Disable comes on and the AWD kicks on intermitanty while stopping.
Took it back to them and they assumed it was a short in wiring when they put the vehicle back together. Got it back yesterday and the lights came on going home along with the ABS kicking in for no reason.
Monroe says that the computer diagnostics is not showing a code and, therefore, they assumed a short in the wiring. I need to take it back to them.
Any ideas what is the issue with it? Please help!
Also, am I to assume correctly that this is the fault of Monroe?

We have an '03 Venture AWD, and based on what you're describing, I'm betting you have a bad hub bearing assembly. This happened to us awhile back when having some rear end work done; apparently it pretty easy to damage the speed sensor wiring that is part of the hub bearing. Bad wheel speed sensor = nonfunctional ABS and AWD. As to whether it's the shop's fault...hard to say; you're talking about a part that (if original equipment) is coming up on 8 years old. Wiring doesn't age well, so it's time may have been coming soon anyway.
One piece of advice; replace with a good (GM or quality aftermarket) replacement. We initially used an "economy" aftermarket item that failed again only a few weeks later.

Thanks for the feedback. Is this something that must be fixed? I am assuming by your description that it should. Is it just the wiring that needs to be replaced or the entire speed sensor? It doesn't sound cheap...

Sorry for the delay responding...hope you still see this.
Define "must" repair. If you need your ABS and AWD functional, then yes, this is a mandatory repair (assuming I'm right about the cause).
As far as repair cost, I'm unsure, because our dealership was honest enough to admit they damaged it while performing another repair and made things right. I'm guessing not more than a $500 repair (estimating 150-300 for part, plus an hour or two of labor).
Let me know how things turn out. Good luck!

Took it to GM yesterday for computer diagnostics because the ABS and AWD lights came back on.
In addition, the heat has not been working. Now, the intake gaskets are bad, the rear wiper motor is bad, rear wheel bearings need replacing and the ABS harness needs replacing.
I am told that the harness is allowing water in. I am betting that this is why the lights keep coming on. Obama's Gov't Motors wants way too much to fix and don't deserve my money.
I'll let you know how everything goes after fixing.
