95 Ram 1500 - smaller negative battery cable broke

I feel like an idiot for asking this but I've asked several people and they didn't know for sure. I want to be certain before I do anything. There are two negatives (regular bigger cable and a smaller cable)combined at the battery and coming from the battery separately. The smaller of the two cables on my truck broke at the connecter some 18" away from the battery. I've looked for over an hour trying to find the broken connection on the frame or electrical boxes to no avail. I can't find it on the manual I bought. It's been speculated this loose battery cable is suppose to ground the frame/cab but I don't know for sure. Can anyone confirm or disprove this? The truck runs fine without the cable, so far.
