| Anyone know what the status is on a diesel engine for the Sequoia or Tundra? Toyota said back in Jan 2008 it would come out for the 2010 model year. Havent seen any news since. | |

Edmunds Inside Line says yes. This seems to be the top level rumor. All other current speculation that I have been able to find references that and old Toyota statements that they would release the Tundra diesel when they have sold 200k of the current models. The engine is supposed to be the 4.5 twin turbo clean diesel from Australian Tundras and Sequoias, some say it will likely be modified for more output, but those people are not authoritative. If they do this then they will either charge a vast premium, like the big 3... and they wonder why they aren't doing well, in which case it will be a niche player. Or alternatively they will market it like they do diesels in Europe and offer it for a similar price to the gas engines, if they do that then people who wouldn't touch a diesel will suddenly find they absolutely have to have one. Personally I love the torque and economy. |
