Out of curiousity, I wonder what makes the MPG meter in the dash "silly" as the photo caption states? One (or Subaru) might think it useful in these fuel-conscious times? ~alpha

I have 2 5speed, Outback XTs ('05 and '08). The author hit it mostly on the head of what it needed in a bigger back seat and iPod interface (could use better brakes, clutch and a 6speed manual) and what do they do? Pork the dang thing up and drop the turbo. Do they even offer a stick anymore? What a waste of a market niche. Any word on the turbodiesel coming to the US? The lease on my 08 is up in 18 months. Guess i will look elsewhere for a replacement. Maybe VW will have put a TDI in their Passat 4motion wagon by then or maybe i'll buy a real SUV. The 3.6R is 5 spd AT only.

is it instead just a downsize Subaru Forester? ??? Outback is higher up the model line than Forester, and is larger. However, for '10, there seem to be numerous styling cues in Outback that emulate Forester. steering wheel felt completely isolated from the road That appears to be the compromise for making the steering feel good on rough roads, which Subaru appears to have spent a lot of effort towards. What is always interesting about these reviews is the "we wanna track car" hints that creep in. Subaru seems to take customer feedback very seriously, and their choices reflect the customer comments. Drivers wanting more of a track car feel have the Legacy, WRX and STI to choose. However, despite the apparently well designed CVT, the 2.5 Outback appears underpowered for hilly areas. It's a pity that Subaru has not been able to come up with a revised natural aspirated 4 cylinder boxer that can at least hit 200 hp. As for no moreTurbo Outback, if Subaru sold so few of them, it's no surprise that it, like the manual shifting Forester XT, has gone away. And frankly, the Outback XT was a pain to drive in city traffic due to the on-off nature of its turbo. One cheapness Edmunds missed, though, is Outback no longer has folding outside mirrors. It is useful and could save your life in emergencies. In 2010 they also eliminated one seat back storage retainer net on rear of driver's side(?). This article is horrible. Looking at all of the other review of the 2010 Outback, this one offers less info and too much of an obsession with the SUV angle. Calling it an SUV misses a huge point - the Outbacks mileage is better than any SUV except the Escape Hybrid. The 22/29 milege soundly beats the Versa (18/25) that the Inside Line is obsessed with. Heck, it is now much bigger and has better mileage than the Passat wagon (19/28) Everything but the inside line articel points to the Outback as still a wagon, maybe a CUV. There is a striking resemblance between the headlights of this Subaru and the Infiniti EX. Such formidably similarities can not happen on accident.
