Cobalt-Good Experience by pvs68

I bought a new Cobalt in 2007 and have had no problems with it. The imports are way over rated! Many auto writers are clearly overly biased toward the imports for some reason and that is unfortunate since we are looking to them for the truth when researching vehicles. I looked at others before buying and chose the Cobalt because it was more comfortable, cheaper, more horsepower, higher MPG, and came with the longest warranty over the others. I went from a Toyota to a Chevrolet too. I have bought numerous new vehicles over the years that included domestics and imports. I had a few problems with imports too; they are not without flaw. The Toyota truck that I had was nice, but it had its issues like the steering wheel coming loose from the metal frame, vibration noises from the dash in cold weather, and lurching forward at stop lights. That too was over priced. The Honda, was the nicest of the imports, but the alternator needed to be replaced relatively early before its time and the maintenance was more expensive. The Mazda was a nightmare with shoddy OEM paint that showed rust coming through, a dashboard that was coming apart within months of taking delivery, and a dealer rep that could have cared less. I recently rented a 2009 Pontiac G5 (identical to the Cobalt except for the grill and tail lights) intentionally to keep miles off of my car for a long trip from NC to Maine. My girlfriend suggested that we take her 2008 Civic and I decided to rent a car since I don’t care for the Civic very much. The dash board in the Civic is goofy looking and I bang my knee getting into it all the time because it is so oddly shaped. It is also not all that comfortable or quick.

The G5 (Cobalt clone) was comfortable for 2500+ miles and got 38MPG on the highway with an automatic transmission according to the car’s computer with spirited driving. It also had 23000 miles on it when I recturned it. Resale of the Civic may be higher, but it is all perception of people thinking imports are better. I recall looking at the Civics when I was shopping for a car in 2007 and they were way over priced as were the VW Rabbits.

There were some gripes from some auto magazine writers about the seats in the Cobalt and again they just seem like biased comments after my recent 2500 mile experience. They said they were uncomfortable, but for me on the long trip they were very comfortable. By the way we drove straight from Maine to NC coming back and I had no problem with the seats.

In short, it is what it is. It is a basic car that is very capable at a reasonable price. Incidentally, when my girlfriend learned that the when the Honda’s country of origin does not trade fairly with us she said that would be her last import too.

Can't argue with the above including the made in USA hint.

We had such good results with our 07 that we bought an 09 a few months ago. Both W/Auto but the 09 is loaded to the gills. Guess the wife had to upscale in some regard.
