The first few miles behind the wheel of the 2010 Lexus HS 250h trigger a cascade of questions about this new car's reason for being. Why a four-cylinder engine in a luxury car? Why not simply Lexus-ize the existing Toyota Camry Hybrid? Why introduce a new sedan that is so similar in size to the existing Lexus ES 350 in the first place?

This car is being built for people that want a prius with lexus service and build quality. I am excited to drive this vehicle. When the car emerged on the web I knew it was the car I wanted. Then in January, I saw it at the international auto show in Detriot and hated it. I thought it looked just like a corolla, but as I have seen more and more of it, it has grown on me. It's back to being the car I want most! http://www.drivehs.com/vote/100272

Ohh I forgot to add, thanks for opening this discussion! I think the car looks better in darker colors. I like the smoke grey one, but I want the tan interior!

When one visits the Lexus HS250h website, there's a very big emphasis on ecology and economy plus the lux stuff.

Why in the world would these people be offering this car with a MOONROOF? It lets in light and heat, wasting it. Meanwhile, they have a Prius with a solar panel that runs the a/c or could be used to help charge the batteries.

To me this is marketing baloney. They aren't really committed to ecology until they take advantage of the energy falling on the Lex.

I believe they are offering a moon roof because it is an expected item in a "near luxury" vehicle. I suppose they could add the whole solar roof option from the Prius. I'm sure Lexus wants to hold SOMETHING back so they can toot their horn next year and say it's a new feature!

TOKYO/TORRANCE, California — The 2010 Lexus HS 250h, the upscale Toyota brand's first dedicated hybrid model, launched Tuesday in Japan. It ranges in price from the U.S. equivalent of $42,479 to $57,535, Toyota said.

If the loaded HS is $57K, I'll get a loaded ES and spend the extra $15K on gas for longer than I would own the car!

The Prius solar panel is not used to charge the battery. Just to run a little fan to keep the interior from heating up so much in the sun.

A small solar panel like that wouldn't make a dent in the electric power battery. It's basically a marketing ploy. (but a good one)

Well, that depends on your perspective.

Here in AZ, the Prius solar panel system can potentially reduce the inner vehicle temp from 160 to 120 and that makes a HUGE difference in comfort, in saving fuel, and in prolonging the life of the electronics in the vehicle.

The Prius solar panels were originally supposed to charge the battery. With it connected they discovered that it interfered with the radio, i.e., it was transmitting RFI and they were unable to determine why. Thus, for now, it only powers the ventilation fan when parked.
