I bought a second hand 2007 Sienna LE 8 Passenger
(49,000 Km) three weeks ago. Having noticed some noise from the engine (sounds like diesel engine), I took the van back to the delaership for inspection. They mentioned that the noise is due to a variable valve gear bolt being too close to the front engine cover, and Toyota had issued aTSB and updated parts to correct the noise issue. The vehicle is still in the shop, and I am hoping that noise will be reduced.

I have that exact same van, and mine is quiet. So I'm sure they'll take care of it, because it's not "normal" by any means.

Good luck.

Did you have any luck with the engine noise problem? I have just bought a 2008 model which has the same problem but only in cold weather. Did Toyota cover the repair cost? If not how much was the repair?

Hi pqp3,

Well, a Toyota dealer had agreed to replace the VVTi actuators, camshaft, and housing assembly as per TSB 3109 on warranty. However, even after this substantial repair work, I continued to notice "diesel" engine sound at cold start.
A chief mechanic at the dealership had offered to keep my Sienna for a few days so that he could conduct further analisys. Eventually, the dealership had decided to replace a short block as it was identified that the noise was coming from the crankshaft area. The work was covered by the new vehicle warranty.
The engine runs much better now except some humming noise at around 1500 rpm and 2500 rpm.

#5 of 6 2008 Trip Computer Lights by pqp3

I have recently bought a used 2008 Sienna LE with the overhead trip computer. It has five buttons - the "mode" button, three garage door opening buttons and a metric/imperial unit button. The door opener buttons and metric/imperial buttons have back-light writing but the "mode" button does not light up. I asked my dealer to repair the "mode" button but was told that it does not have a light. Is this true? It seems strange to me that all the other buttons are backlight and this one is not. Can anyone tell me if their "mode" button is backlight or not. Thanks!

Yes, you are correct to assume that all five buttons are backlit. Your dealer is not playing nicely ....I have an 07 and have had to replace 2 of the bulbs myself. See here for a look at how its done,
