Beware. A lot of potent rolling stock has escaped from the Mercedes-Benz AMG skunkworks in Affalterbach, Germany, in the last year or so. This 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG is just the latest in a line of Benzes with big motors.

The M5 is already 5 model years old! How can you compare the two?? Did you notice that the X5M/X6M have an engine that will likely be in the new M5 that will crush Mercedes?

I've been watching the UK Mercedes website to get an advance on the new E-class and was very interested when I looked at the driver headroom numbers - they list 41.26" when converted from the metric values on the site's diagram. This would be industry leading. Well, that is with a solid roof (which apparantly, you can buy there). The US distributor only imports it with a sunroof, and with that, we get all of 37.9" of headroom (from the MBUSA website). This is on the low end of cars in this category. I really object to being excluded from a choice in cars just because there's no headroom. I'd gladly forgo a sunroof to gain the flexibility of being able to raise the seat, change the seating position and not have to sit on the floor with the seatback reclined. This can be dangerous, since on most cars, this would leave a gap to the shoulder belt and could lead to injury if you ever had an accident as you'd be moving forward as the air bag was coming at you rather than being held in place.

In the rare situation when a car is offered without a sunroof, it is always packaged with any desireable options, so you can only get it as a 'stripper'. This practice probably leads to little demand, and thus a false indication of the desireability. I think a manufacturer that made the sunroof a stand-alone option so you could get the headroom and still get your choice of other options packages, would get a significant response from those tall people (who, in our society tend to make more and can afford cars like this) who have few other choices. Come on Mercedes, stick you neck out a little and lead in this area...I think you'd be surprised at the response.

Well, after a month or so of thinking about it, Mercedes declined to offer the E-class without a sunroof for us tall guys. FWIW, losing the sunroof adds over 3" more headroom to match the generous legroom in the 2010.
