Big Ford and Domestic car fan, but even I find the SHO to be dramatically overpriced. If Ford had brought it in folly loaded, no options (NAV, Performance Pkg., heat/Cool/massaging seats, radar cruise) at $39,900 I think they could have made an argument as the most completely equipped AWD sports sedan under 40k. But getting into the 40's means consideration with not only new G, 3-series, A4 and others, but also certified pre-owned 5 series, E350, Lexus GS, etc. As good as I hope the SHO is, there's no way it competes with those cars from a prestige or image standpoint. And at 40k +, image is a part of the deal, no matter how hards someone argues to the contrary. Worse than that, I believe Ford will have to resort to huge incentives to move these, depresssing what will already be poor resale, compared to the Japanes and German competition. What I don't understand however is the reference to EcoBoost being "Snake Oil". Snake Oil is a term reserved for products that are sold under false claims of doing something they cannot. Ford states EcoBoost provides the power of a V-8 (it does) with the economy of a V-6 (it does, according to EPA). So where's the Snake Oil? Replies to this message: sjaieve (Jul 24, 2009 7:09 am)

Its unlikely to be the 3 series, A4, C Class buyers. if you take a step back and compare the SHO with: ES350 Acura TL Lincoln MKS (for now) Genesis (both v6 & v8) The SHO starts looking attractive. Its a big car with very good performance numbers (other than handling) and for those into this kind of stuff, it may be able to pull buyers from the cars above. On another note, the G and the IS350 are probably the only 2 cars that comes well equiped with the performance numbers that are arguably better than the SHO at the 45k level. The rest, TL, A4, 328i, you name it are not even close (335i is better but you cant get it well equiped in the low 40s). That kind of performance does turn heads, not mine or yours obviously but there will be others. I wouldn't write it off just yet. I love the competition and I can assure you the SHO drivers will enjoy the 350+ horses

How could you comapre Ford Taurus to G37? I am not a G37 fan but Ford Taurus is comparative to Camry or Sonata, or Altima, not G37. I know Ford wants their reputation compelling to be as G37 but Ford is just Ford. And Edmunds also knows it,

I relies I am not a "professional" car reviewer. But neither is Mark Phelan from the Detroit FreePress , who couldn’t figure out what a grab handle was in a 2009 Tahoe. But nothing disappoints me more than reading an article about two dissimilarly equipped cars. The whole article ends up sounding like an apology. If you have a sport package on one car and not on the other it’s not really a performance comparison test. You’re more or less comparing two target markets, not cars. One group likes an easy riding car with a little bit of go under the hood in case they need to pass someone on a 55mph two lane road and a sport performance car. If the sport package falls short on the SHO then take the big stick to Ford for putting out a sub-par package. I mostly like Edmunds.com you guys usually have your act together, I guess with the downturn in the auto market you have got to find something to write about, even if it is drab. Americans will pay for a premium product w. premium materials. Why else do we pay for Acura's, Lexus, Mercedes and BMW...Rather than paying out bonuses we need to hire away talent from the forementioned companies to get back up to speed. We have been asleep at the wheel and are competing at least a decade behind.

I think Ford anticipates that the sales numbers of the SHO will not be large. The key is whether it gives a boost to the lesser Tauruses. They, too, have a bigger price tag (by $4-5K) than prior models. Now in the high twenties and low thirties rather than the former low twenties and high twenties. The markings of the SHO are subtle and it will not easily be distinguished from the non-SHO tauruses. Still, I think the overall taurus line will have trouble getting a reception at these prices since it has previously been a value purchase (reliable, inexpensive, extensive options included in higher end models, abundant generous rebates and discounts, ...). I drive a 2000 Sable which has been a trouble free performer for ten years and 135K miles and I paid 20K. It gets 28 mpg in my commute. I would be concerned about service costs for the newer models after warranty. They have more expensive parts (e.g. 20" tires, lots of electronics in their first year, ...). I am still more interested in a practical, value-priced car than one with side view cameras, etc. I hoep they do well but am skeptical.

They speced up the Taurus with stuff you don`t need but kept the "G" with a lesser spec to keep the price down. Just compare a Taurus with performance pack and maybe a couple of other options ($41 tops) against an equivalent specification Infinit and I think we would see different results. Anyway comparing Ford to Infiniti is a plus for Ford, because Infiniti have Nissan for mainstream cars.

Why didn't chris use a G37x allwheel drive in the comparison? Oh thats right, they don't want to compare apples to apples. why not the g35 4door infinity instead of a coupe? Oh thats right...repeat.

The review I read on Edmunds.com indicated the AWD system is a Haldex with a rear bias--although it wasn't mentioned what the Front/Rear bias ratio is. In the Motor Trend review, I thought it said the AWD system is front-biased. Does anyone know anything about it? With more and more cars, cross-overs, trucks, etc getting AWD (and there being so many different types of AWD systems out there), it's becoming more and more frustrating that practically no one who does car/truck reviews bothers to mention the specifics of the AWD system. Hell, even the manufacturers' websites don't tell you anything about how them--or how they work. Thanks, Tim G.

Too many people complain before they have even seen in person or driven the SHO. Just wait until buyers get to experience the awesome performance (and economy) of EcoBoost and they will be sold. The SHO at $38K is ONLY $200 more (with Inflation) vs. the last SHO and loaded with more content (EB, AWD, 6-speed, etc.) and technology for the price. Note: The 2010 Taurus starts at $25K just like the '09 Taurus = Value! Edmunds comparison of the SHO to G37 was in error, too different size and class of cars, no wonder the G37 was more nimble, its SMALLER. Its foolish to compare the SHO to anything below its size, so stop with the 3-series, A4, G's, etc. you need to move up to full size - Infinity M45, GS450, 5-Series and bigger and then you WILL SEE the SHO is a standout! Plus, the SHO has (10) exclusive features not offered in ANY car in its class, that will add value and low volume sales will keep resale and residuals high.
