#1 of 11 Get the 2009 Accord Coupe or wait for 2010?
Jul 06, 2009 (8:04 am)
After test driving about 6 different kinds of cars, I've decided that 100% I want the Honda Accord Coupe. I was planning on just getting the 2009, but the 2010 model is about 3 months away...
I've never purchased a car before on my own, so I really don't know what is the best option. I know that pretty much no dealer in my state has the Accord I want (I want the 2.4L, EX-L with Manual Trans). Can I still get a better deal on the 2009 since the 2010's are coming soon, even though the dealer doesn't have the car I want and will need to get it from somewhere else?
I've read several places that nothing major will change in the 2010 model, that it will be just some small interior changes and possibly new colors. I LOVE the color of the blue 2009 one, could it possibly not be offered in the 2010 model?
Do I have any bargaining power since the dealer doesn't have the model I want? I plan on requesting quotes from like 4 major dealers around my area and taking the best quote and arguing it.
I am completely happy with the 2009, but for value and bargaining sake, maybe I should just wait for the 2010?? This is a car I plan on owning at least 10 years, possibly more.
I've heard the best time of year to buy a car is July/August for the best price and best APR. Is this true at all?
Oh and lastly, what is the process of buying a car if the dealer doesn't have the one you want? Is it better to drive to whatever location (across the US if needed) and get the car from a different dealer if they have a better rate? Who provides warranty - still Honda? if I wanted tinted windows and the fog lights installed, would I want my local dealer to do those or try to work it into the deal from whatever dealership? or should I just let my dealer close to me deal with finding the car and all that?

You will always get a better deal if the vehicle is in stock i.e. in the dealers parking lot. Your leverage is always greater in this situation.
You will not get as good a deal on the 2010, especially since the arrival is few months away.
You need to decide what you want - lower priced 2009 model or a 2010 model.

Does anyone know when they will start taking orders for the 2010 or when it will be released? I tried to buy a 2009 during the week, but they didnt have the model and color i wanted. Any information would help.

I ended up buying a 2010 model because there was only 1 car like I wanted (blue EX-L manual 2.4L) in the entire country. It was going to cost more to buy the 2009 than a 2010, so the dealer hooked me up at invioice price (roughly 24.5k).
I am saying this because the dealer I bought mine from is supposed to put in their orders for their first 2010 models today (7/17/09). They told me they are expecting them to be delivered in Oct/Nov. Most likely Oct.
Hope that helps!

Smart move, you also saved yourself about $1500 in depreciation for a 2009. I think the new model also has bluetooth as standard.

If you are planning on keeping it for that long, I would go for the 2009 since I assume the odds of a better deal would be higher.
When I got mine (EX-L V6 6MT) on 2005, I got it for $1000 below invoice and 2.9% 60 month financing. I ordered it and waited for 2 weeks, it was an amazing deal. It was on the month of April, so no special timing there.
Truth is, coupes don't sell that well. My assumption is that dealers will order them at cost to bump their volume quota.
I would definitely stick with Internet negotiation, avoiding the lot at all costs.

Errr...missed your follow up on already having bought the car.
Congratulations on the choice and on the deal!

I should have bought in June for the best deal I think, but I didn't have the amount in down payment that I wanted. You got a great deal on the car and financing. I am hoping to get decent financing, but who knows what will happen.
The wait is killing me though

I was at a dealership today in the Sacramento area and was told there's little difference between the 2009 and 2010. As the 2010s arrive, there's probably better deals on the '09s. I checked out an Accord coupe, EX-L V6 with leather seats as standard, but no navigation. Quote out-the-door was 28,400. A potential problem was the car comes from a dealership 50 miles or so away. Anyone have an opinion on the O-T-D quote? Also, anyone think 50 miles on a new car should be negotiated in price of the vehicle?

Why not just go get it at the dealer who is 50 miles away?
