2010 Ford Shelby GT500 vs. 2010 Hennessey Performance HPE550 Camaro - They are, of course, muscle cars in the rawest, most vicious sense of the term. And they're quicker, faster, meaner and flat nastier than anything built back when Ol' Shel and Don Yenko were just guys. And not by a little bit either.(more)

These are the heavy hitters. The big dogs. They're not playmakers or finesse artists and they don't dish out assists. If the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 is Dick Butkus snuffing out a Jim Brown thrust up the middle, then the 2010 Hennessey Performance Engineering Chevy Camaro SS HPE550 is Lawrence Taylor with radar lock on Joe Theismann's right leg. And it's not just that they're powerful and merciless, but intentionally provocative and intimidating, too. On looks alone, either of these cars is enough to make the drivers of other machines cower like a three-legged Labradoodle. 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 vs. 2010 Hennessey Performance HPE550 Camaro |

The over-written Butkus, Labradoodle, radar-lock stuff is bad enough, but making it political is childish.

| In worst conditions and headwind problems you go faster in the GT500 and under ideal conditions you go slower. Let me quote you We might have gone even quicker and faster in the Shelby GT500, except for the 14-mph headwind we faced at this track close to San Francisco Bay there you turned a 0-60 4.3 and a 1/4 mile time 12.4. In the new test you turn a 0-60 time in 4.6 and 1/4 mile time in 12.5 that makes no since. The time between 60 mph' and 1/4 mile time make no since at all. In one test 60 to 1/4 time is 8.1 seconds for the faster time. In the slower time of the newest review it takes 7.9 seconds. I am sorry I do not buy your times the 0-60 time is the same as the old car, the 2007 but then it pulls harder after 60 mphs to beat the 2007 makes no since. The only thing I can come up with is someone could not drive the car. Help me out on this. | |

| So the Hennessey Performance Camaro used a blended fuel (what was the octane rating) while the Shelby GT500 used pump gas, yet the test comparison figures (quarter mile) are suppose to mean anything? Please run the two cars with the same fuel on the same day, and then write your article; I'd really like to see the results. | |
| Imagine 10 years ago being able to buy, with warranty, a legit 12 second car for about 50 grand? In 1999 my Z28 SS 6-speed was over 30k, barely broke into the 13's in the quarter and has all the refinement and finesse, not to mention build quality, of an early AM General Hummer. Although the Hennessy Camaro is quicker, it's also running on a "witch's brew" of fuel while the Mustang is on Cali pump swill. I'd like to see Ford offer a more intuitive knock calibration system, so if you happened to stumble onto some 104 octane, the mod motor could be unleashed to full gallop! I'd imagine it won't be long before Steeda, Roush or another Ford tuner is pulling 600 horsepower at the wheels out of one of these, reliably. For me, I'll take the factory warranty, drivability and better handling of the Mustang. | |
The sad thing is that a stock Camaro SS has a 0 to 60 time of 4.6, the same of the GT500 that was stated in this article ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3VHlOvE2pI ). All you have to do is put some aftermarket parts on it, and it would definitely beat the Mustang Shelby GT500, and it would save you at least 10K ...who needs a supercharger???...

| From IL March 2009: The SS manual also comes with a 3.45 rear end (compared to the 3.27 in all other Camaros). The combination is good for drama-free 0-60-mph sprints of 5 seconds (or 4.7 seconds with a 1-foot rollout like on a drag strip). Easy. Get the 275/40ZR20 Pirelli P Zero summer tires slipping a little at launch, modulate the throttle, and off the Camaro goes, pouring its bass-heavy exhaust note down the road. It reaches the quarter-mile mark in 13 seconds at 110.9 mph. | |
