In city driving be it mixed freeway or surface streets, the average I have seen in my Terrain and Equinox are both around 22/24 mpg in non eco mode and sometimes using manual shifting.

Please be aware that these cars are not going to get advertised EPA mileage figures and if you expect that you are in for a rude shock. It doesn't mean that they are not great cars but you have to be realistic about how you drive and where you drive. I recently did 2500 miles in 2 weeks primarily interstate driving but also 2 lane road driving at speeds from 75mph to 25mph with a/c on and averaged 25+ mpg overall. While not EPA estimates, it was good for what and how I drove.

Hope this helps with some real world results.

I have the same problem. About 3000 miles on the Terrain bought in December and it started. At this point dealer has tried twice to fix. Last time was today, I did not make it home before I got the same service message. They are getting me a loaner car (which tolls the Lemon Law for out of service time periods) and will try to fix it as soon as they get another loaner in. Needless to say I would NEVER have bought this SUV if I knew I would be chasing this service message so soon. Dealer is stumped and I am looking at Lemon laws. I don't know if this is a big issue or not but obviously this kills the market value of the vehicle to keep giving you and error message around the transmission.

#223 of 297 still 26 mpg by dallasterrain

Apr 10, 2012 (10:20 am)

Just took a 600 mile round trip from Dallas to East Texas and back. Cruised along with traffic at about 65 mph plus some stop and go and farm to market highways. Still only got 26.5 mpg, even after all the warranty work I just had done! This was mostly flat to rolling hills driving, primarily on an interstate. You just can't get much more than 26 mpg with the 4 cylinder! Otherwise comfortable and a good highway cruiser with plenty of pep for a 4 banger.

Picked my Terrain up from the dealer today. They had called to say they started the car close to 70 times and could not produce the stall condition. When I arrived I discovered they had driven it 63 miles! The car didn't have to be driven anywhere to produce this problem let alone 63 miles. I was not happy at all. I was able to produce the condition in their presence on the 4th try. Does something smell awfully fishy here? We had a bit of a debate and they suggested I take the car somewhere else. I called the GM Customer Service District Specialist of NY/NJ and she said I needed to bring the car to another dealership to have them look at. Honestly, if this car goes through "another day at a GM dealership" like it just did, it's not going to survive. I'm writing a letter to GM Corporate Offices and will cope with the trouble starting the vehicle. I can only hope the day arrives where the car fails to start altogether and I can call On-Star and have it towed/repaired. Hopefully I am not stranded somewhere uninviting.

the fact that dealer could not reproduce problem in 63 tries and you reproduced it in 4 tries is not necessarily fishy - it's exactly how insidious software bugs behave. the trigger could have something to do with the exact speed/cadence at which you turn the ignition-key, anything obscure like that. anything is possible in cartoons and software.
The GM engineers will know how to fix it via "technical assistance center" which dealership should call. Keep escalating the issue until it is resolved - or trade the car if/when you decide it's time - demand super-favorable trade-in, like 0% depreciation - dealership/GM should offer this to you - ask for that option and get a vehicle that makes you happy!
If you decide to help GM chase the problem, the service department may *need* you to demonstrate the problem to them. If you make the issue occur while the vehicle has "data-logger" connected to OBD, hopefully that will provide the info necessary to diagnose/fix. Also the dealer can loan this 'data-logger' device to you for days/weeks at a time. best wishes....

I have seen elsewhere some owners get close to advertised EPA highway milage, but they drive in the 55-60 MPH range which pretty closely matchs the EPA highway test.

We also found that all the SLT2's were the V6. We special ordered one with the I4. It took about seven weeks. We have had it exactly one month today, and we love it.

I had a 2008 GMC Acadia and it did this all the time, the dealership could never duplicate the problem, after it happend a few times my braking would get wierd when it would come on. Always went out on it's own after a few minutes, I recorded it being on one time, but they would never do anything about it. Always the same thing stabilitrak light would come on and flash a warning to have it checked. My Acadia even once stalled on me when I went to go thru an intersection. I'm disappointed to read these problems with another GMC vehicle. I don't think i'll purchase one again:(
