Value of 1966 Fairlane? by grbeck

My boss recently found out that someone has restored the car that his parents bought brand-new in 1966, and owned until the late 1980s. He learned to drive in the car, and is now interesting in making an offer to the current owner.

The car is a 1966 Ford Fairlane 500 XL convertible. It has bucket seats, a 289 V-8 and an automatic transmission (with floor shift). The color is red (this is the original color).

The car has supposedly been restored. The current owner restores Fords.

I warned him that "restored" can mean many things!

He has not actually seen the car yet (the current owner got his father's bill of sale when he bought the car from the second owner).

Can anyone suggest ballpark figures - perhaps depending on condition - of what he should offer the owner? He isn't looking for a bargain, but he isn't willing to lose his shirt, either.

Thanks!

Like you said, much depends on condition. Here's one that recently sold on Ebay for $7,100.

If it's just a 289, and is a "very clean driver" but not a frame off/ body off, nut and bolt, 100% restoration (which I doubt it is) then around $9000 should be market value. Maybe $10K for one with a highly detailed engine bay, and maybe $12K for one with a super-clean undercarriage with all new bushings, all cleaned up and sparkly under there.

If it were a show car, which of course means "as new or better", then it could run $15K or higher.

On the other hand, if it was just a paint job over an old car, with an upholstery kit, a new top and painted valve covers on an older engine, then $7K is more than enough.

Considering the decadence of the trunk area, the seller cut a fat hog.

Hopefully the Fairlane in question has the "K" engine, if not the "A".

Shifty is accurate on values, but Nostalgia can be expensive.

Thank you for the information. My boss appreciates it...it will be interesting to see whether he actually buys this car.
