2000 Jetta vr6....odd noise and cure

I am hoping to get some insite on what this issue could be.... Like i said i have a 2000 Jetta vr6 and when i start the car or even turn the key to the second position without starting the engine, i get a high pitched whine..sometimes it lasts for 5 seconds sometimes it last for 5 minutes. it seems to be comming from a location around the front fan.....the odd discovery to make the whine temporarily stop is to let it run for roughly 30 secs. and then open the hood and shut it with some force.....what could this be from?
