I've had this '90 Jetta Carat for just over 2 years now, has 190k miles on it (had 160k when i got it), has been thru countless oil changes, both Axle assemblies replaced, new exhaust system, new Bosch Platinum plugs and wires, new Distrib. Cap, new cam with a slightly different grind to it, and a new chip from techtonics. Its a 1.8L with a digifant II system. Now for the bad stuff: I dont know any of what was done to it before i got it (guy didnt have records). It started acting up something similar about 5 months ago when i was going over a mountain pass it just died on me, when i tried to start it, it just kept sounding like it was coughing. Problem rectified with some high quality gas and some gas stabilizer. Now its starting, idles very roughly, then when i go to give it gas it just dies, any attempts to restart sound like my starter is just spinning, no coughing noise or anything. It sounds like if you were to take and put a small electric motor and attach it to a gear assembly without a load on it. Just whir's to its own content. Then if i wait about 20 seconds it just does it all over again, idle rough-give gas- die, rinse and repeat. It's also leaking oil into the intake manifold via the exhaust gas diaphragm dohickey on top of the valve cover (no idea what its called, just know what its supposed to do). Any Ideas? |
