We (my fiance and I) are looking for a sedan for him to commute back and forth to work with (mostly highway driving). Auto transmission is a must. We are looking for something in the 10-14k price range with good mpg and reliability. He is tempted towards a new car because it will be *brand new*, and have a warranty that should last a few years. My fiance has had very bad experience with used cars (spending hundreds on repairs because the warranty was out) so he is very leary of buying anything used again. He was leaning towards a new 09 Versa or Rio (he can get either for under 12k--and the Rio has a 10 year waranty!). I was eyeing a 14k certified 07 Corolla with 30,000 miles on it but I am also wary of a used car. So my question is, should we risk spending 14k on a "certified used" Corolla, or just go with a brand new, cheaper Versa or maybe Rio? Replying to: seijun (May 30, 2009 9:37 pm) For that amount of $14k you should be able to get a 2007-2008 Corolla and if certified a good warranty. Consumer reports gives in a very high rating but to over all compare these two cars is not fair. Kia has came along way in the past few years but if you are ask me take the Corolla and the track record. Take a look on the road when you are out driving what do they look like after a few year down the road. Yes, I understand the Corolla is not in the same class as the other two at all, but my fiance's main concern was that the warranty will not be for as long as the other two cars, and as he put it, he wants "as much of a buffer against future repair bills as possible." Replying to: seijun (May 31, 2009 10:01 am) I have had a Kia Rio since 2002 and it has been great. I get 30 mpg. The only problem I have is that I went to a Jiffy Lube for an oil change and the person putting in the plug stripped it.
