#1 of 2 Front axle trouble by c5nut

Have a 2000 ZR2 w/ 159k mi. Got a leak where the driver side 1/2 shaft enters the transfer case. I'm assuming the seal is bad. It also starting popping really loud a few days ago for a few minutes and hasn't done it since. From reading other posts, I believe the noise is my cv joint. There's evidence of grease coming out of its boot (driver side also). So I have a few questions: Are these seemingly separate issues related (aside from being on the same axle)? How do you check for a bad cv joint? Should I replace the joint (if needed) and seal or get an entire axle kit? And, finally, can anyone recommend a good source for rebuilt axles should that be the best course of action? New to the axle game so I hope my lingo is correct. Thanks for reading!

2002 Blazer, 4.3, auto, 4wd, 96K. I've noticed that there's a "binding" when I back up with the wheels turned hard and don't know what to start looking at.
