Late Oct 08, I checked the oil level on a morning when temp was about 15 DegF here in Upstate NY, N of Syracuse. But the white plastic clip broke and flew into several pieces when I returned the prop rod before lowering the hood. Not having a new clip or solution to the problem, I secured the rod with bread-bag twist ties. Being still in bumper-to-bumper GM warranty, I asked the Chevy dealer to replace it, but they wouldn't because the clip wasn't broken when I had purchased the van (nice excuse, guys), and they advised me that these clips regularly break in our cold weather anyway, and every GM vehicle that they personally owned had broken clips, so I also deserved a broken clip. I later realized that readily available Bussman or Littelfuse plated, corrosion-resistant cartridge fuse holder clips would work well. The prop rod is 5/16" dia, so the 5/16" (larger than the common 1/4" fuse clips) clips are needed. These fuse clips are available from a local electrical or electronic supply store or from old electronic equipment "pulls". I installed two of these metal clips with stainless-steel machine screws thru the same two holes the original plastic clip had used. It's now corrosion and temperature resistant. The next time I returned to the Chevy dealer for other work, they complimented me on the invention.

Replying to: fscoles (May 15, 2009 5:59 pm) When the clip broke on our Venture, I found a big plastic screw in my garage and rammed it into the hole where the original clip used to be. So when I stored the prop rod, I just snapped it behind the screw and "Voila" Your fix is even better! |
