this problem seems to be a tuff one to solve but here goes... this is a manual 1997 chevy s-10 with 81000 miles on it. when i first got it the truck it ran beautifully when my friend drove it. however when i drove it i tended to let off the clutch rapidly and not very smooth sometimes. when i did this the engine catches the clutch but then the RPMs went from 2000 all the way to 5000 and back up and down. however the engine did not sound like it was actually increasing in RPMs, it sounded like it was rattling. the problem kept occurring but i thought it was just because i sucked at shifting. then the engine stopped running and the fuel pump no longer made sound. so i replaced the fuel pump, and reset the computer and then the car ran to my excitement. but then after driving rather fast one day the engine started making the RPMs go all crazy with the rattling again. except this time it felt worse. it even did it sometimes when i was smooth with the clutch. however i was still able to drive it, but it stalled every now and then because it was much harder to shift with the engine going crazy all the time. and then i stalled it. and this time it would not start again. its been that way ever since. cant figure out what went wrong or how to get it to start. could this be a bad clutch or a problem with the mass airflow sensor or computer?

PS: when it was running and shifting well and after i replaced the fuel pump, i took it on the high way. after about 40 minutes the engine started jumping up and down in gear, but this time only 10 or so RPMs. needless to say i turned around from where i was going.

Rattling sounds like spark knock, I would check out the ignition system. Would be a good idea to check for codes, maybe some in history. The RPM comes off the ignition module.
