Expedition 4x4 not working

I have a 98 that the 4x4 indicator lights will go on but it will not be in 4 wheel drive. I put all new ball joints in and after that I noticed 4wd was not working. Is there something I could have messed up doing that? Or do you think the transfer case shift motor just happened to go bad, and if so would the indicator lights still work? they dont blink. thanks for any help.
