A history lesson for you. In the mid 90's, Volvo started working on a FWD based chassis that would become the S80. Volvo's straight 6 engine, and a V-10 designed by Cosworth were going to be the powerplants. The V-10 proved to be too costly,so the straight 6 was given 2 low boost turbo's. Problem was, no one on the planet made a transaxle that could fit into the space required to turn the I6 sideways. No one except GM, which had the same transmission in the Seville. The GM tranny was adapted to the S80's I6,and later the XC90's twin turbo 6. However, the twin turbo 6 put out too much torque for the 4 spd to deal with. So, the engine's power was retarded in 1st and 2nd gears. Later, the turbo 5 was adapted for the S80,and was available on the XC90 from the beginning. this powerplant was smaller and allowed the use of an Aisin-Warner 5 speed gearbox. MOST XC90's on the road are the 5 cyl version. the T6 tranny has really nothing to do with resale. SUV values took in on the chin in the last year and a half. Although they have been coming back of late,XC90 included.

The 3.2 FWD now appears on the Volvo website but the 3.2 does not appear to be available in AWD. Will the 3.2 ever offer AWD and if so, when?

The 3.2 will be offered in AWD. AWD is listed as a stand alone option in the 'Build Your Own" section.

I just "built my own" XC60 on Volvo site. The prices for 3.2 and T6 are essentially the same once you added AWD and Premium package (assuming that sunroof is still complementary on T6). Therefore, for people in need for AWD, T6 seems like a no-brainer to me because of the extra power and 18" wheels.
But then, I noticed the difference in fuel efficiency. The city/highway MPG for 3.2 FWD is listed as 18/27 vs. T6's 16/22. That is pretty impressive, especially the highway number. With the gas price on the rise again, this may be a good reason to opt for 3.2. However, I wonder what kind of MPG does 3.2 AWD get. Anyone has the info?

Sunroof on the T6 will also be $600. It is complimentary on any XC60's that are currently in dealer inventory.
AWD version should do 2MPG worse than FWD version.

Volvomax, your knowledge of this stuff is really good and can't be beat. As a side note, I find it interesting that the Caddy Seville with presumably a V8 wasn't too much for the tranny, but the Volvo T6 was too much. GM must have built these things to within an inch of their design parameters. Five more foot pounds of torque and watch out!.
Gee, I wasn't suggesting that the XC90 resale was in any way affected by the tranny problem. Just that ironically, the XC90 had a very high resale at a time when some were being built with a problematic transmission.
Incidentally, here in New England, the vast majority of Volvos seem to be wagons. Is that true nationally? Curiously enough, while there are lots of Saabs running around these 6 states, they seem to sell percentage wise far more sedans than Volvo. If 7 out of 10 new Volvos are wagons, 9 out of 10 new Saabs are sedans.

North east is the only place in the US where Volvo wagons are thick on the ground.

We are running just under 19 avg with about 80 % stop and go to 60mph, back to zero, back to 60mph...all the while running the A/C on high to combat the 106 degree temps we're getting every day here in central Texas. Highway trips +- 70mph yield only 21-22mpg...our XC 70 would get another 2-3mpg avg.
