After driving the 2010 Volvo XC60 through our slalom test at 65.1 mph — the second-fastest speed we've recorded in this vehicle segment — two observations were easy to make: 1) This SUV handles — probably better than it needs to; 2) will anyone care?

KarenS, nice comment.

As a car nut, I like the XC60. Its nimble, fast, loaded with technology, etc. All in all it should sell well. For a short period of time. Then reason will take over because the pricing is all wrong. Anyone who can fog a mirror pays 31K for a loaded XC70 which offers more room, better gas mileage, etc. In short it is a real family hauler.

Or, you can get in line and pay close to the 44K MSRP for a smarter looking, XC60 brimming with tech features and get less room, less gas mileage, but quicker acceleration. I don't know how many DINKS (dual income, no kids) people there are vs. families but that is how the XC60 vs. XC70 thing will shake out.

From a business standpoint, I have to ask, what was Volvo thinking when they put all this technology in the XC60. Wouldn't it have been smarter to have moved the XC70 upscale with more technology, more stuff and used the XC60 as a category killer at, say, an MSRP of 28K not 37K plus packages?

A fully loaded XC70 for $31K exists only in an alternate reality.

An XC70 T6 with just the Premium Package (standard features on the XC60 T6) is $38K after the current Volvo allowance of $5250. The Edmunds TMV price is $37K. The TMV price for the comparably equipped XC70 3.2 is $36K.

The XC60 T6 has the same EPA combined rating as the XC70:
XC60 T6 16/22/18 (city/hwy/combined)
XC70 T6 15/22/18
XC70 3.2 15/23/18

Calhon, please. With a Volvo loyalty rebate a new XC70 which incidentally comes mostly fully loaded (i.e, there are few options) is in fact 31K-32K most any weekend at any Volvo dealer in New England.

My post said that I was surprised that the smaller XC60 T6 was so much more money than the larger XC70. I recognized that the XC60 could be loaded up with options of dubious utility. What I didn't know was that Volvo had a new XC70 T6. I see this for the first time just today on the Volvo web site. So, my point is largely moot: Volvo is going to have an upscale XC70 that will be north of the XC60.

What does Volvomax say about all this??

Errr, no. The XC70 doesn't even have leather seats standard on either the 3.2 or T6. You need the $3K premium package to get leather or a sunroof. Then there are thousands of dollars more for other packages (climate, convenience, technology, collision avoidance) and standalone options, such as the $2K navigation system.

The XC60 T6 base price ($38k) looks high because it has a lot more standard features than the XC70 T6; such as most of the XC70 premium package content.

The XC60 3.2 FWD/AWD goes on sale in a few months at $33K/$35K. Mileage is estimated at 18 city and 27 hwy. That's the model comparable to the XC70 3.2.

File this as a missive from the Peanut Gallery but in haughty Westchester County NY in the dark days of March, the full incentive price for '08 XC70 was about $28K. All I know is it had leather and my wife and I didnt' like it. I see now that '09XC70 is listed at $34k off of $42k MSRP at the same dealership

March was only 4 months away from the start of the 2010 model year, so I'm not surprised that an '08 XC70 would be very deeply discounted. Afterall, it's nearly 2 years old. The '09 example isn't suprising either, because there's an upfront $5250 discount from Volvo.

An XC70 3.2 with just the premium and climate packages has an MSRP of about $42K. You saw one discounted to $34K. Bickislandguy claimed new, fully-loaded XC70s (MSRP $50K plus) are readily available for $31-32K.

Calhon, let me change focus a bit.

How do you think that the XC60 AWD in base and T6 format and the XC670 in base and T6 format will play out. Is there enough room in the "Volvo space" for four AWD wagons all very close in price? (Maybe all within 10K when the dust settles?)

I wonder why Volvo doesn't back off the % of power going to the front wheels in normal operation (something like 90%??)? Wouldn't it give it a more sporting feel, a feel more competitive with other European wagons? Our 2001 XC70 is so-boring to drive because of that.

Finally, wouldn't the absolute best deal now in Volvo-wagonland be a gently used, certified 2007 (second generation body syle) XC70? Both the new style XC70 and the brand new XC60 must be killing its resale.

I think the XC60 and XC/V70 will appeal to different demographics. That's certainly Volvo's intent.

People have been moving away from traditional wagons to SUVs/CUVs since the nineties; leaving behind a small group of predominantly late forties and older buyers in wagons. Consequently, XC70 and (especially) V70 owners are among the oldest Volvo buyers. The XC60 should attract relatively younger buyers (late twenties to mid-forties) from other brands, people moving up from the C30, S40; and people who are downsizing from the XC90.

S40 owners, for example, are relatively young, and few of them are interested in an XC70. Until the new S60 arrives, there isn't a good place for them to land in the Volvo line-up, except the XC60.

I think the lack of sportiness in the XC70 is due way more to the overall chassis design and settings than the amount of rear wheel bias in the AWD system. The numb and somewhat vague steering on your 2001 is also a significant factor. The XC60, by all accounts is a much sportier ride, yet it uses the same front-to-rear AWD bias.

There are plenty of good deals on used Volvos, including 2008 XC70s, which are much more refined in every way than the previous generation.

the XC70 is a niche product at this point. The people that buy them don't want an SUV.
XC60 is aimed at people who WANT an SUV.
The fact that the XC70 carries the incentives it carries and the XC60 doesn't speaks to the relative strengths of each model.
