Clunk under van, not just in reverse

| We have a 2000 Odyssey, bought used in 2004, which has been great. Mileage = about 140K. But...within last year, it has developed a clunking noise when braking, sometimes accelerating, sometimes on bumpy roads. And sometimes not at all. Almost sounds like it's under the steering column, but sometimes farther back. Have had it to dealer and local mechanic. Front brake calipers have been changed and brakes cleaned (Honda, 2nd visit--1st time, noise wouldn't replicate); back brakes cleaned, plus several other minor things (local guy, usually very good). Engine can be hot or cold; doesn't involve going into reverse, which I gather is some people's problems. No one has said anything about axles, transmission, steering column. Both dealer and local mechanic talk only of brakes, could be back brakes because of unibody construction but *sound* as if it's from the front. But still--the clunk. Not a friendly sound, and we're worried. Otherwise, a great van. Help! | |
| My wife has just reminded me that we get the clunk also when we turn corners, and also sometimes when we're in reverse *and* turning, say, out of our driveway. | |
