They are more Old Money elitist with many Liberal views. Hoffman while clearly my choice in the district was not typical NY Republican. Bloomberg is more the norm for the RINOs in the state. Two big losses of Eastern Liberal Governors should give Obama something to ponder. When will the gays learn that mainstream Americans are not in favor of same sex marriages? What a waste of tax dollars putting that ignorance on the ballot.

Here in Ohio no major party elections. The Issue one to amend the constitution written by and allowing two groups to place 4 casinos in certain cities and giving them the rights to further casinos and keeping others out, giving them cheap $50M licenses for each, and giving them a low, low 33% to pay to government entities in Ohio probably serves as a referendum on the Obama economy that didn't happen past campaign promises and rhetoric. The big ad campaign was that 34,000 jobs would be created in building added to later permanent employment. Actually that will be more like 10,000, but that got lots of people to vote for the casinos ripoff. A sidenote to that is the Obama supporter mayor of Dayton, who was a two-term heir of politcal power from her father who was a state legislator and in with the corrupt party and power group in the black west side of Dayton, was voted out for a relative non politician guy whom the local democrat papers tried to lambast as much as they could as not a good choice. But the people spoke with all the jobs that have left and the allegedly alcoholic mayor didn't do much to keep here serving as a referendum on Obama and his economy. No, he didn't come here to campaign for her as he did for Corzine in NJ. She just went back to her funeral home where I suppose she says she lives (family inherited business). Rumor has it she has actually lived in a city outside of Dayton city limits. Oh the corruption. The party machine tried putting out racist fliers to get people to vote against the white guy to keep her in power. Her strengths were wearing hats of varying kinds for attention and her glasses which had one elliptical frame and one rectangular frame around the lenses. But the two newspaper editorial writers liked her. They were whining today about her loss. I personally do not really care what someone does in their home. Just don't try to force me to say it is good. The majority of Americans do not believe it is moral. No matter how much Hollywood throws it in out faces we are not going to change our beliefs. That does not mean anyone has the right to assault people for the sexual orientation. Calling them names is protected under the 1st amendment. We don't need anymore laws. If I tell my brother he is in the wrong for having an affair outside his marriage that is not a hate crime. Same goes for friends that I have that are practicing homosexuals. I still care about them. I just do not accept the lifestyle they have chosen.

Downstate NY (the suburbs & NYC) & upstate NY (where the Congressional race took place) are very different places with equally different politics. NYC is overwhelmingly Democratic, & Bloomberg himself was a registered Dem until he entered politics. The only reason why he switched to the GOP in 2001 was to bypass that year's Democratic mayoral primary. Later on, he left the Republican Party & declared himself an independent. This year, the GOP allowed him to use its line on the ballot, although he's no longer a registered Republican. After losing the governorship in 2006 & its majority in the state Senate last year, the GOP feels that it's in no position to reject a winner, even if he's a RINO, as Bloomberg certainly is. Upstate NY, which is largely rural & Republican, is an entirely different beast. Upstaters are unmistakeably conservative when it comes to taxes, spending & the 2nd Amendment, but their attitude on social issues is "you mind your business & I'll mind mine". In this respect, they're much more libertarian than, say, Southern conservatives. It's no accident that the Libertarian Party is very active upstate & has actually managed to win a few local elections. Hoffman was entirely the wrong candidate for upstate NY. A Ron Paul type, who could emphasize fiscal conservatism & talk about the dangers of big, runaway government while downplaying the social angle, would do extremely well there. The social conservatives should realize that they're the johnny-come-latelies of the Republican Party, which was originally built around principles of limited government, low taxes & fiscal conservatism. I myself have a hard time distinguishing between a left-wing Dem, who wants to regulate my financial life, & a social conservative, who wants to regulate the rest of my life. And until the GOP figures that out, I'll keep voting Libertarian.

I do not want to be put in a position where I cannot tell my grandsons that homosexuality is a sin against God. Many of the laws that the gay community are pushing through would make that a crime. We have too many laws already. We don't need a law to protect gays from being assaulted. We have laws against that. As far as discrimination. I think the military "Don't ask, Don't tell" should be applied to all employment situations. Especially school teachers.

I would think that a district as Republican as you say it is could have done better than the candidate they picked. I also think of Liberals wanting to take my freedoms away more so than any conservative. I guess you put a lot of weight on abortion? I am more concerned with Liberals trying to tell me what to drive or where I can live, what I can eat, or what doctor I can choose. Taxing me for some wild theory on man made GW. I have communicated with our local Libertarian at length when he ran for our district seat in Congress when Duncan Hunter retired. I agreed with most of his positions. He had no chance to win even with my vote. He did take the time to email back and forth. Something Duncan Jr did not do. |

A bad week for Democrats compounded by an awful moment for Barack Obama. After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective. But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. It is his own Chicago NBC state run media questioning his lack of leadership and respect. 87% of his own are furious about his lack of sensitivity.
